What problems do you see retailers facing with the growing number of different beers today? Do you think Boston Beer can continue to compete effectively against the giant brewers who are now moving into the specialty beer market with their own microbrews? Why or why not? Respond to one of the two following Boston Beer controversies:

In April 2008, the Boston Beer Company issued its first recall (Links to an external site.), because of potential defects found in certain 12-US-fluid-ounce (350 ml) glass bottles manufactured by a third-party supplier which supplies about a quarter of the bottles the Boston Beer Company uses. The Boston Beer Company stated that they believed fewer than 1% of bottles from the supplier could contain small pieces of glass and issued a recall for the safety of consumers. There were no reports of injuries. (Associated Press (Links to an external site.) In July 2013 Sam Adams beer produced a commercial that created controversy over an omitted phrase. The manufacturer intentionally left out “endowed by their creator” in its invocation of the Declaration of Independence. Given no small irony, it was not surprising the many individuals and organizations were not happy. A representative of Sam Adams said they were just following trade association rules. “The Beer Institute (Links to an external site.) Advertising Code says, ‘Beer advertising and marketing materials should not include religion or religious themes.’ We agree with that and try to adhere to these guidelines.” (Kim, Susanna (July 8, 2013). “Samuel Adams Defends Ad Omitting ‘God’ Reference” (Links to an external site.).
