his assessment gives you the chance to discuss and analyse the conceptual and theoretical literature of
the module as applied to specific empirical examples in London. The purpose of the essay is 1) to
enable you to engage with the module literature in a critical manner so as to develop your analytical
and critical writing and thinking skills; and 2) to encourage you to synthesise module material across
different topics, and to apply theoretical and conceptual literature to empirical material.
The essay should conform to standard academic writing conventions (see also below). There is no fixed
expectation of how many readings you should be drawing on, but it is unlikely that you would be able to
write a strong essay if you draw on less than six readings. Equally, you should not be referencing
readings just for the sake of boosting your bibliography at the end.
