Global food chains

In developed countries the global food supply chain appears to have continued to operate satisfactorily during the COVID-19 pandemic so that there have been no issues of widespread food shortage or starvation to date. However, in recent weeks reports are emerging of produce stuck in warehouses going rotten, and shortages in raw materials. For up-to-date summary, read The Economist May 9th p.13 and see:

Already there are calls for greater protectionism, presented as demands food security, that may set backthe developmentfree tradeachieved over the last 40 years and the consequent benefits for people globally.
