– describe their procedure (not participants, but instructions and presentation of materials)

The paper outline is,

INTRODUCTION
– what is the self-reference effect?
– why does it produce superior recall to other forms of processing (phonemic, structural)?
– Rogers et al. (1977) study was the initial demonstration of this
– describe their procedure (not participants, but instructions and presentation of materials)
– describe their results (their Table 2 as we discussed)
– Current study is a conceptual replication; some operationalizations are the same while others are not
– also our hypotheses for recognition memory not recall
– 1. Self ref > structural, phonemic
2. phonemic > structural

METHOD
– full procedure – describe three conditions and match them to the constructs of self-ref, phonemic, and structural processing
– between subjects design
– describe study list – where it came from, how presented in the three power points (I need to give you the reference for the five factor model checklist, which is where it came from)
– describe test list – 40 words, 20 that appeared on study list, 20 incorrect answers drawn from the same category as the study list word (e.g., positive agreeableness word substituted for another positive agreeableness word)

RESULTS
– plan of analysis is to conduct two planned contrasts in line with hypotheses: say what the contrasts are, and why we are not using post-hoc tests
– both DVs approximately normally distributed so no transformation (e.g., square root) was necessary
– Contrast 1: t value and exact p
– Contrast 2: t value and exact p

DISCUSSION
– Recap findings in 1-2 sentences
– Self-ref superior to other two conditions for total recall. Refer back to depth of processing model in Rogers.
– Phonemic not superior to structural. Perhaps not enough of a difference in depth of processing. Maybe because we used a different instruction for structural than did Rogers.
– Cell means for intrusion errors was ordered according to hypotheses (describe) but not enough to reach significance. Possibly low power sample size (What was Rogers 1977 sample size?).
– Conclusion sentence.
